Engineers rightly enjoy strong reputations for their professional ethics. In fact, only nurses were viewed as more ethical in Gallup’s most recent survey on professions. So, what differentiates some individuals and firms from others in the eyes of clients and other stakeholders? They successfully create extremely high levels of trust through extra efforts in those aspects of their relationships that link to ethics. In this session, we will explore links among ethics, trust and accountability and how they tie to becoming a trusted advisor.

Richard Coughlan has served for more than 20 years on the faculty of the University of Richmond, where he teaches courses on negotiations, business ethics and decision-making to audiences ranging from undergraduates to chief executives. He is also a keynote speaker, workshop facilitator and strategic advisor for corporate and non-profit clients across the mid-Atlantic region.

Richard arrived at Richmond after completing both an MBA and a Ph.D. in judgment and decision making at the University of Arizona. Prior to graduate school, he spent nearly five years in the hotel industry, culminating with a position on the management team at The Pebble Beach Resorts in California.
