National Steel Bridge Alliance: Steel Bridge Forum

National Steel Bridge Alliance: Steel Bridge Forum

Wednesday, May 5, 2021 2:00 PM - Friday, May 7, 2021 4:00 PM (EDT)

The Steel Bridge Forum is usually a full-day immersive seminar on current design and fabrication topics for steel bridges. This forum is presented by distinguished experts' panels and often include curved girder design, effects of skewed supports on girder behavior, and design for constructability. The forum are a great way to immediately increase your understanding of steel bridges and network with industry colleagues. This course will be delivered for 2 hours over 3 days in a virtual format. Six (6) PDH credits provided at the end of the course.

Introduction and Industry Overview

This session will introduce the National Steel Bridge Alliance, future design events, resources, and the agenda for the upcoming presentations. As part of this presentation, VDOT will give an update on policies and projects.

Durability Strategies for Steel Bridges

This presentation will describe the four primary types of steel bridge corrosion protection systems, recommended detailing practice to maximize the life of the corrosion protection system, and the relative cost between the systems.

Cost-Effective and Efficient Detailing for Fabrication of Steel Girders

This presentation will offer cost-effective suggestions for steel bridge designs. Girder flange thicknesses and widths will be discussed to show how combining sizes can reduce costs. We will discuss the use of long-span girders with web haunches, girder-to-girder spacing, and optional field bolted splices. Efficient and cost-effective material sizes, welding options, and reduced bolting recommendations will be provided. The discussion will also include types of cross frames and what makes them labor-intensive and needlessly expensive. Finally, we will briefly discuss material grades and coating options.

Innovative Steel Bent Solutions

The presentation describes an innovative steel straddle bent cap comprised of three I-girders instead of a traditional box. Featuring the cap's use on an actual project, the presentation addresses design and fabrication, including the cap's non-fracture critical nature and cost and time savings compared to traditional solutions.

All You Need to Know about Cross Frames

Over the last few years, the steel bridge industry has seen a general increase in the size of cross-frames used in steel I-girder bridges across the country, in terms of both the individual member sizes and the connections themselves. Why are cross-frames getting larger, and why might this create inefficiency— and what can we do to address this issue and ensure that they are sized efficiently?

Bolted Field Splices (AASHTO’s Simplified Method)

This presentation guides the audience on the field splice design changes from the 7th to 8th edition of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. It also includes updates that occurred in the 9th edition.

AASHTO 9th Edition Updates and a Look-Ahead to the 10th Edition

This session will update the audience on the latest changes to the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications.

Practical approaches & Tools for the Design of Steel Bridges Part 1: Layout, Design, and Simon

This presentation guides the audience on efficient steel girder layout, design choices and provides an introduction into the usage of SIMON, a girder line analysis design program for I-girder and tub girder bridges.

Practical approaches & Tools for the Design of Steel Bridges Part 2: Availability, Constructability, and Resources

This presentation guides the audience on steel plate and shape availability, constructability for fabrication, better design details, and a brief discussion on FHWA and NSBA steel bridge design resources.
