About Your Coach:
Chris Martersteck
Chris has been a progressive and proactive leader in the AEC industry for most of his nearly 40 years in the profession. With PSMJ, Chris leads AEC bootcamps and seminars and lectures internationally on topics such as project management and Integrated Project Delivery. He also develops seminars, articles, presentations and manuals with customized tools for project management and integrated project delivery for the complete AEC process, utilizing lessons learned from leading highly-collaborative project teams.
Chris’ AEC experience includes leading fully-integrated teams and provided project management training and process and tool development as Director of Integrated Services and Project Management for a number of top international AEC firms. His extensive experience as an AEC project and program manager and as an owner’s representative and seminar leader, informs his knowledge and abilities to serve the needs of all the project participants to better connect to the goals of clients – and all team members – and maximize success for all.
Chris has successfully managed technically complex and highly accelerated design build/IPD projects as well as conventional A/E projects, ranging from smaller ongoing multi-project efforts to ones exceeding $125 million. During his 15 years with national multidisciplinary AEC and design-build firm McClier (an AECOM company), Chris was Senior Vice President managing larger projects, as well as responsible for the mentoring and training of project management staff and developing and refining the firm’s fully integrated project delivery processes. He served as the firm’s Quality & Risk Management Officer and led peer reviews of sister AECOM companies as a member of the AECOM Performance Excellence Council.
As Vice President and Director of Project Management for Cannon Design, Chris led and trained AEC staff and teams in project, program and construction management as well as IPD/design-build engagements for this 750-person international award-winning architecture, engineering and construction management firm. His responsibilities included development of project management delivery systems and specialized website tools for integrated design-led design-build teams as well as unbundled AEC services across the firm’s commercial, corporate, healthcare, and educational business sectors.
Chris founded Perkins+Will Integrated Services for integrated design-build and program management services at this 1,000-person award-winning firm. He has also managed the Chicago AEC office of an ENR 200 firm, and headed facility planning efforts for a Fortune 50 corporation and a national interior design firm.
Chris holds BS and Master’s degrees in Architecture and an MBA, all from the University of Illinois in Urbana. He has been a registered professional architect since 1978. A member of the American Institute of Architects and a LEED Accredited Professional, he chaired the AIA Chicago Design-Build Knowledge Community and contributes to the AIA’s National Design Build Knowledge Community. He leads national seminars on project management and integrated project delivery. He is a past Board Member of the Great Lakes Chapter of the Design-Build Institute of America and a DBIA Designated Design-Build Professional as well as a DBIA Instructor, leading design-build courses toward DBIA designation.
